What to Do When You Are Not Feeling Confident in Your Work

Not feeling confident at work can give you a sense of unease. You could be very new to the job and surrounded by people that know more than you do. Or, you could have been promoted into a role you don’t feel quite ready for yet. No matter the situation, deep down you don’t believe in yourself enough to be confident at work. How can you change the situation so that you feel more comfortable and confident on the job?

How to Raise Your Confidence at Work

Having a healthy level of confidence at work will help you take on new tasks and advance your career. A successful worker is usually one that exhibits a healthy level of self-confidence to achieve their goals. Self-confidence lets your employer know you can take on tasks and succeed.

One personal branding expert says, “When someone exudes confidence, we want to work with them. We are more likely to follow their lead.” Having confidence means that you feel things are under your control (at least as much as they can be). The bottom line is that if you doubt yourself, others will sense it and they will, too. However, you must be careful not to cross the line into arrogance and run the risk of ruining the ground you’ve gained. How can you build your confidence appropriately?

  • Stay focused on yourself and your tasks. Avoid gossip and politics or other non-productive and career-limiting activities.
  • Identify your strengths and make the most of them. Figure out how you can do tasks by capitalizing on the things you’re good at. This will build your confidence.
  • Also, identify your weakest areas and see how you can reduce them. Instead of worrying about what you did wrong, for example, just focus on how you can do better. Learning new things takes time so be patient with yourself.
  • Tell yourself “I can do this.” You’ve heard the phrase “fake it till you make it?” That’s what this exercise can do for you. People may make funny memes about these kinds of daily affirmations, but the truth is—they can actually work.
  • Seek out the people that support you. Avoid people that want to tear you down, both professionally and personally. When you’re confidence feels threatened, a positive support network of people who believe in you can help build you back up.

We know believing in yourself is hard. One way you can improve your confidence in this area is to monitor your wins. Write down what you want to accomplish every day.  Then cross things off your list to give you a sense of achievement and self-confidence. You can even keep a kind of a “brag book” of your accomplishments and kudos to give you something positive to look back on when you’re having a rough day.
