#1 How would you like me to communicate with you?
This is a great question for your manager on your first day. It’s so easy to mess things up simply because you didn’t realize the answer to this question. Does your boss like emails or a phone calls, a text, or something else? How often should you provide updates and in what form? This will set a great tone that helps you meet your boss’s expectations for how you communicate.
#2 What are some of the challenges we’re facing right now?
This question is so good, we recommend candidates ask it during their interviews. Asking your boss this on day one means that you are looking for ways to solve problems and contribute to the team. What’s not to like about that? It’s a dual-purpose question, too, and one that you can ask more than once to stay focused on what issues are the priority and what can wait until later.
#3 How and when will I be evaluated?
Performance evaluations come annually, quarterly, or even monthly. Make sure you understand what you’re being evaluated on and when. What are your performance goals? What are the goals of the team? These are important questions to improve your chances of success. Especially if your goal is to move up the ladder, get raises, and keep climbing. Getting a sense of the process and metrics you’ll be judged on from day one will help you understand the rules and what is important if you want to succeed.
#4 Who should I look to for help?
Let’s face it, you’re not going to learn everything you need to know during orientation. If you’re in training your first day, find out from your manager who you can reach out to as questions arise. You’re going to probably be learning the job for weeks, months, or perhaps longer. Of course, your goal is to learn as much as you can but to do that you need a go-to resource to answer your questions and provide you with the support you need. Some companies will provide you with a mentor to help. Others will offer a senior leader on the team with experience. But sometimes you won’t know who that is until you ask.
